Brendan Gaughan Pre-Race Report - Dover

FACTS-IN-A-FLASH
DOVER INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
SEPTEMBER 26, 2004

Brendan Gaughan Looks Forward to “The Monster Mile”: Gaughan, driver of the No. 77 Kodak Racing Dodge and 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series rookie contender, loves competing on the one-mile oval in Delaware.

“Dover is one of my favorite tracks to race on,” Gaughan said. “The track amazes me. It is kind of like a big Bristol. Dover is rough on the tires because we drive in so deep, but it is also rough on the drivers. We have to have complete mental focus throughout the day, not that we don’t concentrate all day every week.”

Gaughan Recalls His First Trip to “The Monster Mile”: Gaughan turned to a veteran driver for advice on when to lift before a turn.

“I went to Robert Pressley because he had already helped me quite a bit,” Gaughan said. “When Robert told me where to lift, I didn’t know whether he was setting me up, or being for real. He told me to follow him during the next practice, so I did. Dang if he wasn’t shooting me straight. The only thing was, I forgot to breathe!”

Shane Wilson on Dover International Speedway: Wilson says Dover requires a quick rotation in the turns.

“Dover is rough, and not just on the drivers,” Wilson said. “Winning at Dover begins in the shop. It starts with the right set-up so we don’t have to chase it right off the hauler. The banking at the track calls for a quick rotation through the center of the turns, which helps the driver get back in the throttle sooner.”

Gaughan will Visit Members of the Military Stationed at Dover Air Force Base: On Friday night, Dover Air Force Base is hosting the second of its bi-annual NASCAR socials. Gaughan is among the drivers who have committed their time to sign autographs and meet the military men and women stationed in Delaware.

Touring a Mortuary? This is not just any mortuary. While visiting Dover Air Force Base in June, Gaughan asked if it would be possible to tour the base's mortuary. His request was cleared and his visit has been granted. The DAFB mortuary is responsible for all members of the military who have been killed in action while at war. They are returned to DAFB before being sent home to their families. In addition, because of the size of the mortuary, following 9/11 all remains were sent to DAFB to be identified.

Equipment: Gaughan will race a Penske chassis, PRS-37, at Dover International Speedway. The Kodak Racing team acquired PRS-37 from Ryan Newman’s ALLTEL Racing team. The chassis was raced by Newman last year at Las Vegas and at Charlotte in the Coca-Cola 600, and this year at Las Vegas
