Chicagoland Pre-Race Report

FACTS-IN-A-FLASH
CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY
JULY 11, 2004

Brendan Gaughan on Chicagoland Speedway: Gaughan has no competition experience at Chicagoland Speedway. He was fortunate enough to test at the 1.5-mile oval in 2002 with his NASCAR Truck Series entry.

“When Shane [Wilson] and I tested the truck [at Chicagoland Speedway] I liked the track, a lot. It has a lot of qualities that reminded me of the track in Las Vegas, but to say I think I am going to go win it, well I do, because I am Brendan Gaughan and I talk big. My team has to back me up now!” Gaughan said while laughing.

Shane Wilson on Chicagoland Speedway: Wilson is not sure whether his limited knowledge of the track will benefit the Jasper Engines and Transmissions team, so he is counting on Matt Lucas, the team engineer.

“Testing a truck in 2002 definitely does not give me an advantage with race set-up for the [NASCAR NEXTEL] Cup Series in 2004. From what I remember, the track was still a little rough back then, so I am sure it has smoothed out and will have a Vegas-like approach. “Luke” will be a huge support, as always. It just helps having the Penske-Jasper Racing knowledge around me. The guys on this team are familiar with the tracks and they have notes from the cars. All I have is truck notes and they will not get me too far on Sunday.”

Birthday Celebrations at Chicago: Gaughan, along with Doug Bawel, co-owner of both PJR and Penske-Jasper Engines and president and CEO of JET, will celebrate their birthdays on Saturday, July 10, while Bill Wilburn, Gaughan’s spotter, will celebrate his birthday on Sunday, July 11. Too many candles to count here!

Fast-Paced Action is not Always Limited to the Race Track; it is Required at the Shop as Well: Just over one week ago, Kodak and Jasper Engines and Transmissions came to an agreement concerning one-off events. JET acquired three more races, bringing its total to seven from the originally planned four. The new agreement came together as swiftly as the original deal between Penske-Jasper Racing and Kodak, leaving some finished business to a bit of a refresher course.

Thanks to quick action in the paint shop by Cesar Bustos, Clint McGlammery and Jessie Simpson, the Kodak decals were removed from both the primary and back-up No. 77 Dodges. They were repainted and re-decaled in the Jasper colors, leaving just enough time for the cars to go to the set-up plate and the chassis dyno.

Team Test Session: The Penske-Jasper Racing team plans to test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the Miller Lite crew July 12-13. The team is taking chassis PRS-77 to shake down. PRS-77 was scheduled to make its debut at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend; however, slowed assembly schedules forced the team to rethink its line-up.

Equipment: Brendan Gaughan will race chassis PJR-33 at Chicagoland Speedway. PJR-33 is a new chassis and a sister car to PJR-31, which faced competition in California earlier this year (St. 5th/Fin. 6th). The car has no competition history though the team tested it at Kentucky Speedway. During the test, Gaughan was happy with the body and balance. He looks forward to seeing what it can do in race trim.
