Gaughan Thrilled With South Point Chevy Following MVille Practices (audio included)

Brendan Gaughan has had a lot of reasons to smile this week. Of course he has been smiling because his Georgetown Hoyas are playing in their first Final Four in more than 20 seasons.

And following two practice sessions at Martinsville Speedway on Friday, Gaughan had another reason to be happy – the performance of his No. 77 South Point Chevrolet at a track that he says he hates.

“I’ve run a lot of short track races and from my Winston West Chevrolets to my other Craftsman Trucks to the Penske cars I have driven, this South Point Chevrolet is the best short track vehicle I have ever driven,” Gaughan said. “I’m scared to say I feel this good.”

Gaughan finished seventh on the board with a fast lap of 19.910 seconds (95.108 miles per hour). Gaughan was especially good on long runs.

“What Bryan Berry (crew chief) and the guys have given me is awesome. I know that Dennis Setzer could take this Silverado and win with it. It’s my job to go see if I can get a top five finish in this truck.”

Gaughan will qualify his truck tomorrow at 11:10 a.m. ET. The Kroger 250 will follow at 3 p.m. ET, live on FOX and MRN/Sirius Satellite Radio.

“My team keeps telling me that I have to finish in the top four since we are representing the Final Four Georgetown Hoyas basketball team this weekend with several decals on our truck,” Gaughan said. “This South Point Chevrolet could do that.”
