South Point Team Resorting To California Scheming

California Speedway is often considered a home track for Brendan Gaughan and his South Point Racing team, but it didn’t feel like home for the Las Vegas-based crew on Thursday.

After one full practice and a rain shortened second practice, the South Point Racing team found themselves more than a second off pace. The team spent the remainder of the afternoon furiously working to improve the No. 77 South Point Racing Chevrolet.

“This was a new truck body that we thought it would be one of the strongest trucks in our shop,” Gaughan said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t had the results we wanted today.

“We have a lot of work to do before tomorrow. We had such a good test at Homestead earlier this year that we expected to come to California with a top truck.

“Something has got to be broken in the truck. We’re not giving up on it yet. It’s just been a frustrating day for the entire team because we can’t get the truck to respond the way we want it to, the boys will find it and we will get back on track before the race.”

The South Point Racing team will qualify tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. PT. Live qualifying will be broadcast on SPEED.

The San Bernardino County 200 will begin Friday night at 6 p.m. PT. Follow Gaughan and the South Point Racing team during the race live on SPEED, MRN or Sirius Satellite radio.
